Viewers have been noticing the thicker coats of the bison on our Live Cam lately. An expert from Grasslands National Park, where the bison roam, has an explanation.
Bison develop thicker fur everywhere on their bodies, it is just thicker near the shoulders and neck, while the rest of the body is much like that of a cow.
Though there may be snow on the ground, not all the vegetation dies in winter. Bison are very adept at scratching at the ground to uncover grasses and other plants during the winter months.
The Plains Bison feeds primarily in the early morning and late afternoon, often ranging over several miles. Tune into the Bison Live Cam to see more.
