Meet Our Owlet!
While Mr. and Mrs. Hoot’s attempt at a nest this season wasn’t fruitful, the pair is doing well and has been sighted. Thankfully, the Owl Research Institute has set up a Live Owlet Cam on a nearby Great Horned Owl nest where a two-week-old chick is currently being raised!
From Jess at the ORI:
For those of you new to this camera, for the second year in a row, this camera was set on Ms. Hoot. After fledging two chicks last year, we were sad to see this year’s nest fail. The cause of failure is still unknown. We at the Owl Research Institute are happy to report that we have been observing Ms. Hoot and she appears healthy. Second, she has been “hanging out” with a male owl, presumably Mr. Hoot. We have heard them hooting back and forth in the early hours of the morning.
Now, for the new nest. This nest is located in the same general area as the previous nest. The nest is on private land in a rural area. There is only one chick and we believe that this chick is approximately ten to fourteen days old!
Great Horned Owls raise their owlets for about 42 days before they’re off on their own. So we have a good month with our new Owlet! Click here to see the Live Cam now and meet our owlet today!
(Thanks to suzie2013 for snapshot of our fuzzy one!)
