Standing Like Statues
Giraffes have perfected the living statue. Val from Mpala answers an African Wildlife Cam viewer’s question on how they got so still.
It is not unusual for a giraffe to stand still for a period of time. Their great height allows them to see far distances, They use that advantage to scan for predators and to take in what is happening in their environment. They have few natural predators because of their comparatively huge size so they don’t normally use camouflage as a protective mechanism. They’ll run if spooked or use use their powerful legs to defend themselves. They will also head butt each other in a fight with another giraffe. Check out more in the Field Guides.
