It’s that time of year when Polar Bears International (PBI) staff flies to Churchill, Manitoba, from all around the world to get set up for polar bear season. The polar bears themselves are on the move as well.
Staff, scientists, and volunteers rotate in and out of town for months but PBI only has limited space: housing quickly becomes a serious logistical issue.
PBI has one permanent house in Churchill, but rent two others unfurnished. That means that at the start of each bear season, staff moves in two full houses worth of furniture and beds, not to mention kitchen supplies, bedding and towels, and all the other household necessities. Moving days are exhausting but can also be a fun team-building exercise. Who will stay together this year and how many people can we sleep in one room? Can we use empty totes as makeshift nightstands? Where did the toilet paper go? Can Mike sleep in the closet?
No matter where one ends up sleeping in Churchill, it doesn’t really matter once you’re out on the tundra surrounded by polar bears. Everyone is excited to spend the season together and get out onto the tundra as soon as possible.
So while the staff and Polar Bear Live Cam warm up (or cool down in this case), check out this highlight video and meet Siku and his polar bear family on the Live Cam in Denmark.
