Little Luna, a polar bear cub at the Buffalo Zoo that has been hand-raised by zookeepers for the past four months, will soon be getting a friend: Kali, an orphaned cub currently living at the Anchorage Zoo in Alaska.
Kali was given to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) for protection after his mother was shot, according to Donna Fernandes, president of the Buffalo Zoo. Kali will live at the Buffalo Zoo for just a short while to socialize with Luna; eventually, he will be moved to a different facility. Luna will soon no longer be reared by zookeepers, as she is growing too big to be handled directly.
The zoo hopes that, “seeing these cubs in zoos in Buffalo and around the world will help people understand just how precarious the situation in the wild is for polar bears.” We hope so, too!
