Peggity and Brownie

Great Danes are Great Thinkers

Once in harness a Dane is supposed to be in thinking mode. In this case, the big dog Brownie seems to be thinking, “This is not on my list of what to do if… I hope someone comes along and explains it to me.”

Danes are thinkers; the puppy in the picture “Peggity“ grew up to be a service dog for a person with both hearing and balance issues. She saved the lives of many by repeatedly jumping onto the bed to awaken her deaf owner as the building was filling with smoke. Everyone, including the cat, got out just before the building was fully engulfed.

– Carlene White, founder of Service Dog Project in Ipswich, MA. The organization trains and places Great Danes with people who live with Multiple Sclerosis, Friedreich’s ataxia, and veterans with disabilities.

I continue to marvel at the connection animals and people can have with mutual respect, love, and dedication. Carlene took a dream of helping others and has the attitude of “What do I need to do to make this work” rather than “I can’t”. I have so much respect for all SDP stands for and will support their mission in every way I can. Thank you Explore and SDP for all you do for all of us:)

I have owned Danes all my life and I think this project is brilliant! One thing though, those nails should be munch shorter! They can easily break or split at that length and you don’t want that. They can also give deep scratches to other dogs during play. Isn’t there a vet monitoring them?
