There’s been quite a bit of drama at Bella Hummingbird’s Nest recently; a hummingbird “intruder” nicknamed Rosie has been aggressively harassing the chicks and mom. In the past few days she has even built her own nest mere feet from Bella’s. But the tension has taken a more serious turn as Rosie may have interfered with the chicks being fed, leading to the removal of the hatchlings for their own safety. The host of the cam has detailed these events:
“Patience and Rebel (the chicks) have been removed from the tree. Please know that much consideration was given before the decision was made by a Certified Hummingbird Rehabilitation specialist. Terry (the rehabber) indicated that baby hummingbirds typically get fed 25-30 times a day. These babies were lucky to get fed 4 times a day. She was ‘one thousand percent sure Patience would have not made it through the night’.
The entire nest was placed in a shoebox layered with tissue and paper towels. The babies are being fed every 30 minutes until about midnight to make sure they are strong enough to make it.
Some of you are probably worried about Bella coming back to find her babies gone. She will likely come a few times and then move on to her next nest; she just might be relieved as she no longer has to place herself in danger to care for her babies.”
The cam is currently featuring Rosie’s own nest, where she laid an egg in the hours that Bella’s nest was removed. We’ll keep you informed of events as they happen, stay tuned!
