World-renowned – and 80-year-old – oceanographer and explorer Dr. Sylvia Earle will lead two “Live Dive” expeditions this Saturday, May 21st to be broadcast to a Jumbo-tron on the National Mall in Washington DC, into schools in Ventura California, on explore.org, and our Facebook page. Catch them live at 10am and 12pm PT!
During the dives, Earle will take us on a trip through the kelp forest off California’s Anacapa Island, one of the richest marine environments in the world, while answering ocean-related questions!
The special event is part of the National BioBlitz and Kids to Parks Day celebration facilitated by the National Park Service.
Formerly chief scientist of NOAA, Sylvia Earle is the founder of Mission Blue and SEAlliance. She has logged more than 7,000 hours underwater, including leading the first team of women aquanauts during the Tektite Project in 1970, and setting a record for solo diving in 1,000-meter depth.
Her research centers on the exploration and conservation of marine ecosystems and the development of new technologies to access the deep sea and other remote environments.
