DETROIT

Come Inside the House That Makes Sense

This art project from Tyree Guyton, Founder of the Heidelberg Project in Detroit, creates art in run down neighborhoods. Come inside and learn more.

The Heidelberg Project (“HP”) is a Detroit-based community organization designed to improve the lives of people and neighborhoods through art. As HP says on their website, “The theory of change for the Heidelberg Project begins with the belief that all citizens, from all cultures, have the right to grow and flourish in their communities. The HP believes that a community can redevelop and sustain itself, from the inside out, by embracing its diverse cultures and artistic attributes as the essential building blocks for a fulfilling and economically viable way of life.”

HP is one of the several nonprofits working to revitalized this Michigan city. Detroit, bigger than New York, San Francisco and Boston combined, was once the fourth most populated city in America. But as American manufacturing declined through the end of the 20th century followed by the Great Recession in 2008, Detroit was one of the hardest hit cities in the country, eventually filing for bankruptcy.

However, Detroit’s soul has not fled. Come on a soul-search with Charlie’s while he travelled to Detroit, which he calls the “gut check of America,” and flip through our Detroit Photo Album Volumes 1 & 2. Never stop learning.
