Dogma Thursday
Often rescued dogs, these dogs become rescuers. Canine avalanche dogs are part of an elite team, but they are the only ones using their scent to find missing persons who have fallen under frozen water or snow coverage. In addition to tracking (following a trail), dogs in these type of disasters use their scent to “search” – “Searching is different from tracking. When a dog is searching they are using an airborne scent. When searching it is advisable that search and rescue teams work with the wind as it will carry the scent to the dog” (source).
Explore.org grants $100,000 to The American Avalanche Association to support the Avalanche Forecasting Lab in providing accurate avalanche forecasting to the Teton county, Wyoming.
