Owl Capture
On Pond Island, Great Horned Owls are a common predator to the nesting terns. The Seabird Restoration Program has the proper permits to trap these owls and relocate them to appropriate habitats in Northern Maine.
These majestic animals represent one of the top avian predators in Maine. While Great Horned Owls feed on many small mammals such as mice and voles, they are also one of the only major skunk predators.
Here, two seabird biologists hold this Great Horned Owl moments after recovering it from the traps on Pond Island, earlier this summer.
