Meet Our Bears

Backpack the Brown Bear Eating Breakfast

With a handy bear ID at our disposal (thanks Cam Ops!), let us give you some insider info on the brown bears you’ve come know and love. Today, meet Backpack, bear #89.

Backpack is son to Holly, bear #435. (Holly is particularly suited to motherhood – find out why here.) He was first observed as an independent 2.5 years old bear in 2008. As a yearling in 2007, his front leg appeared broken and he limped noticeable throughout the summer. By early fall, his leg appeared to be healed. The injury was not noticeable in 2008, which was his first summer as an independent bear. In short, he’s a survivor!

As far as personality goes, well… he’s just delightful! Backpack seems tolerant of other bears. He cam to Brooks Falls in July, and since not yet able to compete for fishing spots, instead he’s become adept at scavenging fish from older bears.

During early July 2012, he was frequently observed traveling and playing with #130/Tundra. And you can see him playing with Chunk in this highlight video from last week here. You can identify Backpack as the medium-small young adult bear with a distinctive face with dark, round eye-rings and a straight muzzle.
