Where Do Puffins Go In The Winter?
The Atlantic Puffins that departed from the coast of Maine in late summer will not make landfall again till spring. So where do these stout little seabirds go throughout the cold winter?
Anecdotal evidence from fishermen claim that Atlantic Puffins have been sighted in the North Atlantic. Yet no conclusive data has been gathered. Project Puffin has begun placing geolocators on puffins from both Seal Island and Matinicus Rock. Hopefully in the coming years a clearer pattern will emerge of where these birds go and if they travel solo, or in groups.
