Siku’s Siblings

An Update by Polar Bears International

After seven years of waiting at Scandinavian Wildlife Park at Kolind, Denmark, polar bear Ilka finally succeeded in having twins on November 12, 2012.

“It’s wonderful that Ilka is finally succeeding in rearing a pair of cubs. Her maternal instincts are very strong and she is taking perfect care of her cubs. It’s incredibly wonderful to see,” says zoo director, Frank Vigh-Larsen.

The cubs are siblings to Siku, who Ilka could not nurse or take care of. Siku means “sea ice” in the Greenlandic language. The name is symbolic, because polar bears are dependent on sea ice for their survival.

Right now Ilka is being very protective of her cubs and won’t let anyone near them. The gender of the two bears is still unknown, and they are yet unnamed. When Scandinavian Wildlife Park opens for the season on April 26th 2013, guests will be able to see the twins playing in the huge polar bear enclosure, which covers a total of 2.6 hectares. Later this month, the twins will have a camera trained on them, so we can all watch them grow up. Until then, you can keep up with the cubs on Facebook.
