Voice Of The Bell
Perhaps you’ve heard the sound of a bell on the background of the Osprey Cam this summer? This is the beautifully crafted ship’s bell is used to usher staff and campers to meals, lectures, and activities at the Hog Island Audubon Camp. With a clear tone and a classic shape, it has been said that the bell was cast in the same foundry as the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia.
Each summer, people from all over the country travel to this island just off the Maine coast to learn more about ecology and ornithology while experiencing the beauty of the bay.
Top notch instructors such as Ken Kaufman, Scott Weidensaul, and Lang Elliot can be found every summer sharing their love for conservation and nature with campers on this pristine island. Roger Tory Peterson was one of the first instructors, and today, the camp is run by Dr. Stephen Kress, the man responsible for restoring the Atlantic Puffin to the Gulf of Maine.
