Fast Facts: A “Harvest Moon” is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. Also called a Full Hunter’s Moon, Blood Moon, or Sanguine Moon, the orange color of a harvest moon is caused by looking at it through the greater thickness of the atmosphere near the horizon, which scatters blue light while letting more red light through. “So a moon near the horizon takes on a yellow or orange or reddish hue” (EarthSky).
