This summer, supervisor Jenny Howard and resident interns Julia Gulka, Jenni Heisz, and Emily Brownlee are spending the season on Seal Island! Seal Island National Wildlife Refuge (SINWR) is one of the largest seabird breeding islands in the Gulf of Maine, and is home to many species, including Black Guillemots, Razorbills, Puffins, and Arctic and Common terns. Jenny, the interns, and volunteer Nicholas Huffeldt are currently living on Seal.
We will follow their adventures throughout the summer as they study the many species of seabirds on the island. As Jenny puts it, “Why might we spend our summers living on a mile long rock, with no cell phone reception, living in tents, and seldom taking showers, generally wearing clothes covered in tern poo? What a question! The simple answer is, we love it. We do it for the birds!”
Here is a glimpse of the cabin on Seal Island, with a beautiful sunset view!
