Bear Number 6!

If you didn’t already know and haven’t seen the posts this week there are eight species of bears (see below). From the mere 100-pound Sun Bear to a bear we know intimately here at Explore – the 1,200 lb. polar bear!

Some things you may not know (or have forgotten) about the polar bear:

• Polar bears are the largest species of bear and the largest land predators in the world, with males weighing 800-1,200 pounds and females about half that.
• There are approximately 20,000-25,000 wild polar bears world-wide, with about 60% of those in Canada. Populations inhabit Greenland, Siberia, and Alaska, and a small population in Norway.
• Polar bears have a large body with a long neck and a proportionately smaller head than other bears.
• Explore.org has a new cam on Siku’s twin siblings, Luka and Lynn! Watch them romp and play in their tundra exhibit at the Ouwehand Zoo in Rhenen, Netherlands, Wed – Sun. The little ambassadors for their species help inspire people to reduce their carbon footprint.
