This snapshot taken by explore.org fan K and B captures all three species living the peaceful life. In fact, they live “mutualistic” relationships, where everyone benefits and size doesn’t matter!
Prairie dogs are natural farmers. Their digging improves vegetation and wards off unwanted weeds. This makes prairie dog towns a preferred grazing area for bison, who in turn improve the prairie dogs’ efficiency in foraging for food.
Cowbirds, also called Buffalo Birds, eat the seeds and insects that gather on a bison’s back, and in turn help to keep the large animal clean.
As the snow melts and the animals come out from hiding, see them on the Live Bison and Prairie Dog Cam here. Prairie dogs are already out and about today!
