Tree guards are important this time of year at Gengda Panda Base! The devices keep pandas away from the tops of trees so they can form new branches and have a fighting chance to grow. Branches are beneficial not least because their leaves will provide shade in the yards. But try explaining that to pandas.
It doesn’t matter if the panda is 2 or 10, they love climbing up the trees and removing everything they can, which is why most of the trees look like dead stumps in the yards.
Pandas are smart. They’ll take a couple of days to assess the situation and then take up the challenge of outwitting their keepers. So far the pandas are winning.
