Beluga Cam Captain Hayley Shephard and assistant Pat Mislan took the Beluga Boat out for a test run, it was action packed with belugas chasing the boat with a joyful curiosity. Our cams captured some great footage, and Hayley tells us what she saw from on-deck.
“It was a successful test run today as we launched the Beluga boat, live cameras, and mic. Although the seas were lumpy and the wind was blowing at least 25 knots from the SE, we were still able to capture close encounters with the Beluga whales on both the underwater and above water cameras.
A highlight from today was when our underwater cam was nudged by a juvenile. This camera is definitely attracting the attention of these curious and playful creatures. We also saw a tracking device on the back of another individual. The Canadian department of Ocean and Fisheries are tracking a number of the local Belugas to see where they go when the ice starts to form in the Hudson Bay. It is thought that they spend most of there time in the Hudson Strait, just outside of the mouth to the Hudson Bay. These tracking devices will reveal their movements, as long as the devices stay attached to the whales.
We’re looking forward to another great day on the Hudson Bay tomorrow. See you out there.”
