Every dog owner is convinced that their dog is the best in the world, and we at Service Dog Project are no different. Perhaps it is a question of having a dog who matches their lifestyle and personality. The dog extremes are constant activity of the Jack Russell vs the typical Dane who is more pensive, often lazing about, studying his world. For Dane ownership, it is more important that you own a big sofa than big yard.
Danes make excellent service dogs because they closely match a human style of exertion, then resting in a comfortable atmosphere. Generally, they’re cautious about meeting strangers, but love being with their human partner 24/7. Their bulk and strength serve a person better than cane or crutch, where the pressure on the harness is often up as well as down to balance. Because of that, a Dane makes it possible for the owner to stand straighter, and not bent over a cane or walker.
They don’t have a winter coat; if you need a jacket, they do too. And tennis ball chasing is not in their job description.
