From Rescued to Rescuer

After the arrival of four wonderful puppy litters last month to our partner organizations Warrior Canine Connection (WCC), East Coast Assistance Dogs (ECAD), and Bergin University of Canine Studies we’d like to feature an organization partnered with explore.org that sources its helper dogs not by breeding, but from rescuing.

Paws and Stripes provides service dogs to wounded U.S. military veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Their helper dogs are all rescued from shelters; experienced service dog trainers teach the veterans and dogs together as the teams they will become in life. Each year there are an estimated 2.7 million shelter animals euthanized when they could otherwise be adopted. The animals that Paws and Stripes rescue from shelters are paired with warriors who need them. Watch this short clip featuring US soldier Lawrence Montoya, Jr. who served in 3 combat tours overseas, only to return with severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, haunted by his experiences in Afghanistan. Paws and Stripes teamed him up with a rescue dog named Battle, with whom he shared an instant connection. The had both suffered a tremendous amount of personal pain; they each now have someone to lean on.
