Mystery Swimmer on African Wildlife Cam

“Well, I’m not a Nile monitor expert, but here goes…” Val from Mpala tries to identify our own Loch Ness Monster.

Viewers spotted a mystery swimmer in the Hippo Pool on the African Wildlife Cam. Val, the Executive producer/director of Mpala Live!, agrees with the Cam Ops – – it’s most likely a Nile monitor, “They are fierce critters and have a reputation for not backing down from anything, including crocs. And they eat just about anything from carrion to live prey such as small mammals, frogs, toads, fish, spiders, and even birds.”
Animals are able to tell when they are in danger from a predator. Clearly the bird above made the right decision that it needn’t flee in this case. Check out the mystery swimmer in these short videos captured by our Cam Ops and read some fast facts about the Nile monitor here.
