The Common Murre
Similar to razorbills, but more robust with a deeper and blunter bill, the Common Murre is another inhabitant of Seal Island you are likely to spot if watching the Puffin Loafing Ledge Cam!
A member of the Alcid family like puffins and razorbills, Murres breed along rocky coasts, nesting in shallow depressions on steep cliffs. There is a high degree of variation in color and markings of Murre eggs, which may allow parents to recognize their own egg among all the nests in a colony!
Another fun fact is that murre eggs are so pointed at one end that if you placed one on a flat surface and pushed, it would roll around in a circle! This shape may help keep the egg from rolling off its nesting shelf.
How many Murres have you seen on the Puffin Loafing Ledge Cam?
