Panda Spotlight – Pan Pan
/ Post by Pandas International
Pan Pan (meaning Hope) is considered by most to be the most prolific panda daddy there is, fathering 32 known cubs including Bai Yun of the San Diego Zoo, Tian Tian of the National Zoo, and Yan Guang of the Edinburgh Zoo.
Pan Pan, who will be 28 this year, had a rocky start in life. Pan Pan was found abandoned in the mountains of Baoxing County when he was just a small cub, after a massive die off of bamboo threatened the survival of the local panda population. He was taken in by Li Wuke, who had much experience caring for panda cubs, and was raised with another panda, An An, in Li Wuke’s small bedroom for the first year of his life.
