Meet Li Denghe, The Youngest Keeper At The Bifengxia Panda Base

Securing a position as a panda keeper at the Bifengxia Panda Base is competitive. With a keeper to approximately every two adult pandas, there are limited positions available – and many interested candidates.

Li Deng, only 28 and the youngest keeper on staff, was one of the lucky ones. After graduating with a degree in animal and veterinary sciences, he was excited to use his education in his new job. Although he had never seen pandas before taking on his position, his attachment to them grew quickly. “Now I’m closely connected to these pandas,” says Li. “They’ll come out and approach me when they hear my voice. I really like this job.”
