Monday, April 17th is Bat Appreciation Day! And while we at explore appreciate bats every day on our Bat Cams, we’re giving a little extra attention to Seba’s Short-Tailed Fruit Bats when our partners at Organization for Bat Conservation join us for a live chat at 3:30pm ET / 12:30pm PT that day.
OBC tells us a little about these bats:
“Weeks ago, we received a call from a Midwestern research facility; research had concluded on their colony of Carollia perspicillata – a.k.a. “the Shorties.” With funding now depleted, the program-head could no longer afford the cost of caring for these animals that have been raised in captivity their entire lives.
The reality was bleak. Without someone to take them in, all of these beautiful, healthy animals would be euthanized. So we decided to take action.
We’re making this year’s Bat Appreciation Day, the beginning of #SavetheShorties Campaign. We have one-month to raise $10,000, necessary for a new 23′ enclosure, immunizations, vet costs, and food. Time and time again, you’ve helped our organization achieve the impossible, and make a real impact. We can’t do this without you.”
