Fun Fact Thursday! The Brown Bear lives to be about 25, grows to 6’5″ on average and weighs around 700 lbs. National Geographic says, “Despite their enormous size, brown bears are extremely fast, having been clocked at speeds of 30 miles per hour.” Living in North America, Europe, and Asia, “it is the most widely distributed bear in the world.” Finding sustenance in salmon, leading into “fall a brown bear may eat as much as 90 pounds (40 kilograms) of food each day, and it may weigh twice as much before hibernation as it will in spring.” Check out the Explore.org Brown Bear & Salmon Cam for amazing footage of them doing just that!
In winter, the mother bears will hibernate and give birth to cubs. They’re storing away those Omega-3s up there in Alaska, and preparing for a long winter and hopefully fruitful spring!
