Extreme Opposites

/ Post by Katie Billing of Polar Bears International

As the winter holidays come around the corner you may receive a holiday greeting card with polar bears and penguins playing together. For clarity’s sake, polar bears and penguins live on opposite sides of the globe. Polar bears live in the northern circumpolar regions, which include Northern Russia, the Canadian Arctic, the Alaskan Coast, Norway, and Denmark. Penguins however, live in the southern hemisphere including Antarctica and the subarctic islands. Some penguins live in warmer habitats including the Humboldt penguin (pictured above) found on the coasts of Peru and Chile, or the little blue penguin that inhabits the southern coast of Australia. As you can see, a wild polar bear would never encounter a wild penguin. Even though these two animals are not the best of friends in the real world, they still share similar harsh environments, not to mention that they both face climate warming.
