Summertime in Churchill is wonderful: wildlife abounds, wildflowers are blooming, and kids can play outside without needed multiple layers of clothing.
The Polar Bears International team is in Churchill right now getting ready for the launch of the Beluga Cam season. They took the new boat, which is slightly bigger than last year’s, out for a spin in the Churchill River to start breaking in the motor and get the underwater camera mounted. It was a very promising first look at what the belugas are doing this summer.
They saw tons of whales, hundreds if not thousands, and quite a mix of adults (white) and young whales (grey). When the boat was finally being brought in, a whale came up and sprayed a team member, surprising everyone.
Though it was overcast and windy, it was still a very nice way for the crew to spend the day since the wind kept the bugs away. We look forward to launching the live cam soon and sharing this experience with you!
