He currently serves as technical advisor to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) on issues relating to biodiversity, pastoralism and subsistence agriculture. Earlier this month, he was awarded the 2015 Whitley Gold award, a prestigious environmental prize for his work with local communities that encourages the adoption of more sustainable farming practices that conserve pollinators, boost crop yields, and benefit people in East Africa.

“I am delighted that Dino will be joining Mpala to take on this important role,” said Mpala Chair of the Board, Dr. Scott Miller. “Dino is passionate about research and education and Mpala has been a large part of his life and career development over the past 20 years.”

As Director, Dr. Martins will oversee the daily operations of its research center, and is responsible for maintaining and expanding the center as the leading drylands ecological research centre in East Africa.

Martins said, “I am looking forward to working with an excellent staff, our partners, researchers, students and community leaders addressing the immense challenges and opportunities in Laikipia and the drylands in Kenya.”

His appointment is effective July 18, 2015.
