Grooming is a major activity for social animals – horses, lions, humans, and many other animals regularly clean their fur, scales, feathers, and skin. Grooming serves a social purpose, allowing animals to bond and build relationships. It’s mutually beneficial, grows feeling of trust and loyalty, and establishes hierarchies.
Baboons like those featured in this highlight video from our Mpala Cam can’t reach certain parts of their bodies, their backs or the tops of their heads. So they enlist a compatriot to get those hard-to-reach areas. They, in turn, reciprocate, and the groomed becomes the groomer. Taking turns ensures there’s no remaining lice, dirt, tangles, or hard feeling. Check out the video below!
