When Were Pandas Declared Endangered?

/ Post by Pandas International

Pandas have been the focus of conservation as far back as 1958 within China (although all conservation work with Panda’s was stopped during the Cultural Revolution). Pandas were not declared as endangered however until much later.

There are actually two dates when the Panda was added to the Endangered List as there are two Endangered Lists. One for America and One for the Rest of the World.  The US Fish and Wildlife Service added the Giant Panda to their Endangered List in 1984. The IUCN (The World Conservation Union) had Panda’s on their Red List in both 1986 and 1988 but classed as “Rare” and not “Endangered”. The ICUN changed the Pandas classification to “Endangered” in 1990.
