According to this CBS Boston report, the cam began streaming live last week, and is thought to be the first live-streaming camera at an East Coast seal pupping site. The camera will help scientists learn about the seals’ behavior, without having to visit the island, which is located about 20 miles off the coast.
Gray seals mate on land or in the water, but come ashore to give birth after an 11-month gestation period. Pups are about 3 feet long and have a white coat when born. They stay with their mothers and nurse for only about 2.5 weeks, and then have to fend for themselves.
