On March 14, 2012, while filming underwater on location off the coast of an atoll in French Polynesia, Mike saw a diver below him signaling that he was running out of his breathing supply. Ever the selfless kind, Mike responded instinctively, springing to his rescue to share his own breathing supply as long as it lasted. When the two of them exhausted the last breath still well below the surface, Mike helped the other diver make an emergency ascent. In the process he saved both of them, but found himself partially paralyzed from a severe case of the bends. While the man he saved was ultimately able to walk away from the incident unharmed, Mike was told he may never walk again. The doctors say he has six months to find out.
