Cheetahs are designed for speed

Next Friday, the Track & Field competitions will start in London at the 2012 Olympics. Duane Solomon had a movie-style beginning to his Olympic running career. Impressive, though no match for these Tanzanian beauties above. Duane secured his Olympic spot by running the Men’s 800-meter in 1:44.65. Of course, the cheetah could do it in 27 seconds, but don’t let that stop you Duane!

The Wildlife Conservation Society says, “Cheetahs are designed for speed. Their large nostrils allow for increased intake of oxygen, and their oversized heart and lungs help power their bodies. The sleek cat uses the weight of its tail to balance its body through sharp turns, and its spine acts as a spring for the powerful hind legs.” Fewer than 15,000 cheetahs survive in the wild today, and every effort is needed to keep these sleek, natural Olympians in the world.
