Live Chat: Stressed Out Polar Bears

Do you get stressed when you’re hungry? Are you tense or even angry when you can’t predict your next meal? Well, polar bears feel stress too!

As climate change affects seasonal freezes, extending sea ice thaw on both sides of winter, polar bears have shortened periods of time to catch and eat seals and other prey.  The uncertainty of if and when they’ll get the nutrition they need can influence reproductive success and survival of polar bears. Identifying individual polar bears undergoing such stress can help scientists and managers monitor the health of individual bears and the effect of sea ice losses on polar bear populations.

Join us on Sunday, November 9th at 2pm ET / 11am PT as Alysa McCall talks about how we measure stress in animals and value of collecting this data.
