Move Over Monday: Petra, Jordan
You might recognize the roseate Treasury of Petra from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The forgotten city of Petra is no set though.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, this Nabataean caravan-city, situated between the Red Sea and the Dead Sea, was an important crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and Syria-Phoenicia. Petra is half-built, half-carved into the rock, and is surrounded by mountains riddled with passages and gorges. It is one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites, where ancient Eastern traditions blend with Hellenistic architecture. (UNESCO)

Pack your bags, we’re off to the Middle East! The Queen Rania Family and Child Center was established in 2005 to combat child abuse and bullying in Amman. The children at the Queen Rania Family and Child Center use paint, brushes, and paper to discover their dignity and identity. The art program teaches the children to trust themselves and deal with traumatic experiences.

The children use art “as another language, a global language” to express their feelings and build self esteem. The artistic outlet is based on psychological and sociological theories, but ventures into the creative soul to build not only a safe place for children, but worldwide awareness of these worldwide issues.
