Like a long arm reaching out into the Pacific Ocean, the Kalaupapa Peninsula (pictured above) is the site of Saint Damien’s mission. Saint Damien, also called “The Leper Priest” and “The Hero of Molokai,” was sent to Hawaii from Belgium in the mid-1800s where he was ordained. “For the next nine years he worked in missions on the big island, Hawaii. In 1873, he [volutneered for] the leper colony on Molokai [caring] for lepers of all ages, but was particularly concerned about the children segregated in the colony.” Eventually he became a leper himself, but that did not stop him from building hospitals, clinics and churches across the island.
